ABSTRACT

This workshop aims to present the multiple possibilities of using film extracts in language courses. It will be divided into four parts:

  1. the philosophy behind the project English through Film. Using Film in the Language Classroom
  2. why use film excerpts in language courses?
  3. ten top film activities
  4. satisfaction survey following a pilot conducted at the Institut des Langues Vivantes at UCL, Belgium

The audience's active participation will be invited; various film excerpts will be shown.

BIOGRAPHY

Timothy Byrne spent two years teaching asylum seekers in Brussels prior to working overseas, in Gabon and then in China. He is now at UCLouvain, Belgium, where he is involved in teaching writing as well as in CLIL, helping various faculties transition to teaching in English. He has published on assessing writing in CALL and has authored Business English Writing Skills: A Writing Survival Kit and English through Film: Using Film in the Language Classroom with ACCO, in 2014 and 2016 respectively.
