Abstract

Engaging in Teacher Development (TD), can be a complex business. Just because you’ve taken part in a developmental activity doesn’t guarantee any kind of outcome. At its best, TD will help us live up to our potential and become the teacher we are capable of being. At its worst, it addresses none of the issues that teachers and students need and is, frankly, a waste of everyone’s time. An aspect of our careers which can and should be one of the most rewarding is often squandered, and this is why, for our professional wellbeing, it’s important that we have the skills to assess carefully the choices we make and that we are offered or sometimes obliged to participate in, and the strategies to plan accordingly. In this talk I will describe some of these strategies that I think are most effective, including developing a Personal Strategic Plan, and Peer-collaborative Development.
